Getting new Stack Dado Set

I went on Amazon and they had the Oshlun SDS-0842 8-inch 42 tooth stack dado set listed among some others. I read some reviews and decided on this one as it said it gives a flat bottom cut and the reviewers were very please. I shall let you all know how I like it after it gets here. Should arrive sometime after Christmas. Not in any hurry because I don't need it right away anyway.

I got the 6" Oshlun on sale at Rockler. I haven't used it yet. While the bottom of the groove may be mostly flat, the end blades have a high angle, so the edges do cut a bit deeper than the bottom of the dado.

The do this intentionally, and also purposely size the dado a bit small to accept "nominal" plywood, so you may need to use the included shims.

I'm very impressed with the apparent quality of the set, especially for the price, and can't wait to use it.

If you find the bottom of your dados not smooth enough, one of these will correct any deficiencies in your dado stack.

You can find vintage a Stanley #71 on ebay for around 20$, if the veritas one is priced too high for you. I have no idea how much the new stanley costs.

I can never understand why people obsess about the bottom finish produced by a dado when a router plane cleans them up nicer than any dado stack could hope to.

well, there are more uses for a dado blade than cutting dadoes.

people cutting tenons and bridle joints and other such things with them need a cut smooth enough for a visible joint.
