Shaker Table Done->Wife is Happy-> Ask for the Domino NOW!

Just finished this Shaker Table for my wife. I built one last winter for my Church auction and my wife liked so much I built her one. (I think this is the time to ask her about the Domino ???

A few details about the table:

• The Design is based on an old Dana Robes design. He calls it a Shaker hunt board.
• The top is a solid piece of curly soft maple (very curly)
• All of the drawer fronts came from 1 piece of curly cherry (I even cut and matched the rails from the same piece)
• The dovetails are boring and made from my 10 year old $50 PC dovetail jig (works great, but the dovetails look like they were made by a jig ). I hoping to get the NEW PC dovetail jig with variable spacing when it is released later this spring.
• The knobs are walnut
• The legs on the front face are quarter saw (nice flecks)
• I plan on "sun burning" the table to darken the cherry... when the we get sun and warmth here in WI

I finished the table with Rockler's Poly Gel. This stuff is great
All you do is rub it on with a scothbrite pad and wipe it off with paper towels. It takes about 2-3 coats. You never get any runs and the finish has a real nice feel to it. I used to get heart failure every time I had to finish a project. With this stuff... it's a piece of cake. If you haven't tried it... try it! (Note-I used a water based poly for my first coat on the maple top... I didn't want the maple to go too yellow)

Very nice work. I can definatenly see why your wife wanted one. You do great work. The wood choice is excellent and the grain match on the drawers is very well done. That table is simply beautiful.

As for the dovetails, they look perfect to me. Sometimes I think people get too carried away with designing them, especially on drawer sides like yours. To me, that's when jigs are a big help.

Perhaps with such a beautiful table as that you should be able to get a domino and a new dovetail jig.

I bought the maple at Kettle moraine hardwoods here in Milwaukee. It was about 16" wide by 8 foot long. It cost about $50 for the piece.

That is a beautiful table!! Terrific work! It's easily worth $1500 so you've paid for the domino already

I used some soft maple late last year on a project and was VERY please how it looked...nice curl, etc.. It's a great wood!

Someone told me (might have been you) that Dana Robes used to sell his plans. I called, and they said they stopped doing that.

This table has been on my list for a long time.

I have a couple questions, if you don't mind.

1) Did you use 1.5 inch square stock for the legs? or 1 and 3/8?

2) What is the length and width of your top?

3) How tall are the drawers?

4) How wide is the bottom drawer?

5) What is the length of the side rail (not including the legs)?

6) How much does your top overhang the sides?

Boy, that really came together nicely! I think your choice of the various woods really complement eachother, and the figure is in harmony with the nice clean lines of the piece.

Just ordered a Domino myself. I'm selling my biscuit joiner, Jet mortiser, and some other neglected tools to help offset the cost. That softened the blow to the pocket book, and appeased my sweetheart.

Kettle Moraine Hardwoods has a store on the border between southern Milwaukee and Northern Racine.

They usually have some very nice pieces EXCEPT for cherry. Their cherry is usually poor.
