Re: Primary grind A belt sander, clamped upside down is a recurrent solution shown by woodworkers that actually make furniture. Most teaching pros demonstrate with a grinder, as it's reproducible with minimum fuss. I use a coarse ATOMA brand diamond plate followed by a oil Stone and strop - which works well enough on mild steel (Marples/Stanley/01) but isn't effective on modern powdered steel which is too hard.
