My first thought was some sort of vacuum set up to hold the piece down?

And Bastone Walnut alone is rare, much less any type of figured Bastone Walnut.
I would also recommend a model that the head moves up and down. Not the table.

nice. I hope you post a photo once you split them open.
Dave,
I live in a suburb of Sacramento. Plenty of neighbors. Why would that be safe to assume? Woodmizer seems to sell a lot of mills! And in reality, sawmills are really not that loud. Not much...
The base may contain some nice spalting, so I would retain that. In actuality, I would probably retain all the way maybe 2-3 past the crotch. You may also want to consider loading it into a truck,...
Derek, I see your point....but...if your grain ran vertical, and you wedged, then the wedging forces would be against the vertical grain on the legs. Therefore, possibly splitting the leg? Beautiful...
Could that be the wrong sized thrust bearing?
And if you are wedging, would you not want the grain to run horizontal?
Hello Jim,
Bench dogs and doe's feet work great on round objects. I have not done much mortising, but I think I have seen a fixture using wedges for this.
Richard
Why? Just use holdfasts, doe's feet, planning stop(s), etc. And if/when you need a vice, consider a Moxon and a Hi vice.

Do you possibly already own a skill type saw? If so, you may want to look into the Bora guides.
I believe the top would need to be reground to remove the stains. Find a machine shop.
Old Growth Redwood sounds perfect as this is in California. Contact Far West Forrest.
I have not used my PC jig in a while. But I seem to recall when building a box, you need to cut the joints for opposing corners on the left side of the jig, then the other 2 opposing corners on the...
So why not mark a tooth, then stone one side of the teeth one full rotation. Then make a test cut. If there is still drift, repeat.

possibly there is a riser block installed?
Richard
I do not believe Jack has read the Anarchist workbench book, though it is free. There is only 1 workbench designed and built in this book. The Anarchist workbench is a great start. I mimic Chris's...
Radu, what is your plan for flattening your bench top in the future? Seems like the vice is going to cause problems in the future. You may want to consider lowering it, similar to Rob's installation.
Ron, agreed!
Ron, I have often wondered the same thing. So which corners do you cut against the lefthand stop and which on the right?
Shouldn't you be squaring the mitre slot/table to the blade first? Then adjusting the fence to the blade and/or mitre slot?

He has built a chair. He does not like using a scorp. So why not try to make an adze? As he mentioned, he enjoys making things with metal. Do you have some reason for telling him to "put the torch...
I think you should go for it. I'm sure you will learn a ton, no matter what.
Regarding breaking down plywood, I set up 4 "little buro" sawhorses with a sheet of foam insulation board on top, just behind my truck. Then I can just slide out one sheet at a time, make my cuts,...
