MDF is made similar to how the old thick building paper was made - a thick slurry of fibre that is steamy hot, dewatered & put through presses.
You shouldn't use a drywall screw as they are very brittle & break easily.
I enjoy doing natural edge bowls. I just screw a 3" faceplate to the bark side with fairly long screws & if need be use a shim. To move the blank you can move it by loosening & tightening the screws....
Spend your cash on a bigger motor & a proper blade- as mentioned - 3/8" x 3 tooth x .032", & maybe a chainsaw with a longer bar. If you have a serious problem with rocking get an electric plane....
That first end section looks alot like acacia to me.
I was having lower back problems & raised the lathe about 3". Made a big difference. This mainly showed up when bending over hollowing a bowl.
Possibly wrong forum but.. From Osmo. Canada but believe manufactured offshore. Anyone tried it??

Steve. I don't think you have a bandsaw but just in case... Never cross cut a round section of log on a bandsaw without it being securely wedged to stop it from rotating.
How about the finished product!! By the way it looks to me like you are clamping to hard & starving your joints of glue!
William. I think what Bob meant is just CA the outside cut surface of the bark. Even this is not always necessary, but you will know!! I would sand when you are finished _ a challenge with NE bowls!!...
Why not just finish it! It is probably somewhat under 19% by now which isn't that wet. Just keep the CA close by in case you get some small cracks. I always wax the area beside the crack & am not...
Oland tool. Just .021" clearance for a 1/4" square HSS tool bit. They work like a hot darn. These bits are available up to 1/2" locally. Mostly about 4" long. You probably want to drill the hole...
I did once. It was a very small shallow NE bowl. I made a post to fit & turned it into a ring holder.
Joel.Turning produces fine dust as well as shavings, especially dry wood. Then there is the sanding!!If you can exhaust outside a good fan & 6"duct from a boot will help
Well said Robbo. Some people obviously have to learn the hard way. The emphasis on cancer is misguided. The problem is loss of lung function, and wouldn't it b nice if our lungs expelled all that crap...
Bob. I would respectfully suggest that you do a lot of research. You have a lot to learn.
You should consider incorporating a cyclone with a dump box. Much more effective. For the best info around on dust check out the Bill Pentz website.
Joel. A 2" hose is basically useless. The air just tunnels. It is air volume that really pulls away the fines. Look up the Bill Pentz website & do some research is the best advice a I can offer. ...
Gary.Is you backing plate up tight behind the belt on your grinder?I have found that the edge is rounded over otherwise.
I get the impression he is trying to turn a section of log. Not a split blank.
Wow. How did a simple subject end up getting such a serious/ highly technical response!! If it is too loose it will likely break. If it is too tight, it will likely break & could deform the top...
A VERY WORTHWHILE addition to any shop dust system is a cyclone with a drop box before the DC. This not only keeps the larger stuff out of the fan prop but will take out a large portion of the fines,...
Peter. Saw horses work great for slabbing lengthwise but not for lopping off corners!
For everyones info, for ripping logs lengthwise a chainsaw tooth profile straight across chisel like...
I have knocked off some corners with an electric chain saw without problems but mainly use the bandsaw which obviously you don't have.
If you had a piece of rod threaded to suit a faceplate you...
