Add this to the list of ridiculous statements. It's a complete over generalization on both sides. Can't we all just get along. :D

Not to be picky, but I think you are referring to CBN wheels. Just wanted to point this out in case someone wants to do a search for them.

My recommendation would be to buy one of the EOS cases and make a thin walled shell to cover each half.
I've had my DVR XP for 8 years now and I'm still as happy with it as the day I bought it. The headstock has detects when it is swiveled, so it's not hard to re - align and is quick to do. I would...
I didn't say a chisel was a plane. A plane is a jig to hold a blade (chisel) to easily flatten a board. It makes the job of flattening a board much easier than doing it with just the blade.
It's...
Isn't a handplane a jig to hold a chisel? If so, why is it ok to use those and not dovetail guides. You could definitely get more skill by flattening a board with a chisel than with a plane.

The best help for me was using tools that can do the job. I just got beat up by the jarring of the tool when I first started hollowing. That was with hand held tools. I made myself a captive...
That's a really slick way of doing it, Marvin. Thanks for sharing!
I spoke with Don today. Looks like he is getting out of the spindle adapter business. What he has listed is what he has left. Too bad as I had heard good things about them.
Thanks for all of the replies. I think you've pushed me over the edge to get one of the systems. Now if I can only get Don Pencil to offer an 1-1/4"-8 spindle adapter. I can't find it on his site...
You beat me to it. I guess it took me to long too attach the pictures.:D
Unless the bowl is extremely deep, you should be able to pivot your headstock to the first detent and still use the normal banjo that came with your DVR XP. It won't get the ways completely out of...
I went cheap and bought some buffing wheels from one of the big box stores several years ago. I don't know what they are made of (cotton?), but I assume they are made for polishing metal.
They...
I've got the DVR XP and I think it's an amazing lathe. I've had mine for 7 years now and never had a problem. I'm not a big fan of changing belts to change speeds so the dvr motor is perfect for me.
Wow! Beautiful work, Derek. I look forward to the rest of the pictures.
Looks great to me. Nice job!
I bought the 1 1/4" Thompson skew a few years ago and love it. I also have a 1/2" skew (home made from A2), which covers everything I need from a skew. I bought the big Alan Lacer skew a couple...
When I've used black gesso on the outside of a piece I apply the first coat, sand, then apply a light second coat. Then I spray on 2 coats of clear flat acrylic. It seems to be a very durable finish...
Congratulations on the new shop and the new lathe. I love m DVR XP, though the 20" swing yours has makes me jealous.:p
Looks like you've already made up your mind, but I thought I'd add another positive review. I love mine. Changing the board wasn't very difficult and Teknatool has a great video on how to do it. ...
Sounds like a great deal to me. I've had my DVR XP for 7 years and I couldn't be happier with it.
Derek,
What a good looking pair of planes! Looks like they work pretty well, too. Thanks for taking the time and effort to photograph and document the process. I certainly appreciate it and I...
Very cool! I love shop made tools, especially when they look this good. Well done, Trevor!
Thanks to all for the information and advice. I think I'll stick with the AO wheel until it wears down enough to no be usable, and then take another look at the CBN wheels. Thanks again!
I've read so many glowing reviews of the CBN wheels by DWay Tools that it has really piqued my interest. I'm currently using an AO wheel, 150 grit, and I get a pretty good edge off of the grinder. ...
