A gallon of water weighs a bit over 8 pounds. Seven pounds of white oak does not contain 8 pounds of water. Maybe litres not gallons?
Cheers, Robbie.
I have a motorised stropping plate - it's a round piece of mdf on an old potters' wheel. Works brilliantly, speed control is via a foot pedal which lifts a drive cone up to push a big pulley.

If you decide to grind your own, make sure you have a good mask. Copper powder is really nasty if inhaled.
Double wedge. Cut a pair of long wedges for each side of the saw, clamp the blade and tap the wedges together on each side.
The 'million facts' thing sounds like one of those urban myths that sounds good but bears no resemblance to reality. Do you have any reference for that?
If we can teach computers to learn like...
Do you have a source for that quote? I looks like von Neumann's quote regarding random number generators (Anyone who believes a deterministic method for generating random numbers is living in a state...
Would a long 10mm socket and extension bar work?

Hi all,
I'm slowly learning how to get a passable edge, helped along by the many sharpening threads. I was lucky enough to buy a couple of boxes of old tools cheap which included some nice planes...
Hi Stewie,
Being a noob to the world of planes and sharpening, is there any benefit to/reason for sharpening with the cap iron on?
Cheers, Robbie.
Bowling centres use solid 'oil-out' absorbents to remove oil from the lanes and approaches all the time (or did before all the lanes went synthetic). Dump a shovelful on the stain, pour on some...
Another couple of thoughts...
Don't use herbicides, many of the chemical pathways they block in green plants don't occur in fungi. What might work is grain fumigation tablets, which release...
Hi guys,
Just a thought - oil of cloves is routinely added to paint as a mould inhibitor. If nothing else has worked maybe it's worth trying on holly?
Why not use diamond plates and store them in alcohol? Use alcohol for the lubricant as well. Not much lives in 70% ethanol.
Would a water aspirator work? They are pretty cheap and can pull down to about 0.1 atm.
