I just had this same issue, I would love to know the answer too. It was QSWO, unfortunately the drum sanded material took stain a little different. Also as Ron mentioned grain raising was terrible.

Sorry for the sideways pic, I posted it from my "smart" phone.
Keep your eyes out for a used Foley Belsaw planer. Usually go for $350-$500. I have a 5hp model. It's a beast. I believe there are two right now for sale on Craigslist in my area.

Thanks guys. Jeff the dimensions are 28"x45"
Just finished a mission style mirror for my foyer. Made out of 4/4 and 5/4 QSWO. First time using the Jeff Jewitt finishing process, really impressed. Had to move inside for the final gluing and...
John,
So I should use an oil based primer instead of a latex primer? Or a coat of bullseye?
I have not heard that, thanks.
Looking for recommendations for white paint for a hall bench/tree.
It is made out of poplar with some mdf panels. I do have some latex white paint from the trim in the house but not sure how it...

I have a 20 year old el cheapo imported drill press, Sold under a few "value" lines, cummins, harbor frieght... I need to get a new chuck since the existing one will not hold really small drill...
You can knock the sheen down with some steel wool, that will mask the pores a little. I had good luck doing this with sapele finished with shellac. I just had to wait 1+ weeks for the shellac to...
I ended up putting it on too thick which caused the rubbery mess. It soaked up the first two coats good with out having any excess finish to wipe off. I kept putting the finish on with out wiping...
Its a knock down bookshelf. The boards are 8" x40". I have them placed on the floor concave side down with the fan on top. Once assembled air will be able to circulate on all sides.
I am going to start by putting a fan on one side of the wood. If by some chance I am able to get the wood to flatten. Once I apply a finish to all the sides, will this stabilize the wood or will...
I am currently at the finishing stages of a project. While sanding the piece I noticed two boards starting to cup. I surfaced the lumber myself by removing a little material in three stages. ...
Looks like I will bringing the project inside to the basement. Hopefully it will not stink up the house. Unfortunately it is not going to be 70 degrees in upstate NY until June.
Thanks for your...
I am planning on finishing a cherry bookcase with a coat of watco and then top coating with seal-a-cell. My garage is about 40 degrees. Is it too cold in the garage to use wipe on finishes? I do not...
I just recently finished a cherry toychest with just Watco Danish Oil. It was a long drawn out process to build a consistent sheen. It took about a half dozen coats with some wet sanding in between...
I agree with Don and Paul, I was starting to look at these "lunchbox" planers, reading the reviews and then I got a good deal on a used Belsaw. Around the same price but build like a tank. Cast...
I am considering using QSWO for my next project, mission style mirror. I have heard of people having issues with this material as it has a tendency warp and cup after it has been cut. Is this a...
Gary,
My concern is that it is never going to dry. It has been almost a week since the last coat of danish oil and it really has not gotten any dryer in the last four days. That is why I am...
I think I am out of the woods. I rubbed as much of the tacky oily finish off with a good soaking of MS and a rag and then wiped completely dry with a fresh rag. It took about two days to dry to...
I am in the process of finishing a toy chest for my son with Watco Danish Oil. It has a solid cherry frame with cherry plywood panels. I think I may have "over done it" with the danish oil. I was...
Do I/should I sand between coats with waterlox? Also is it easily repairable? Can I just recoat after it gets a little use or do I have to sand and refinish the entire piece?
I am almost complete with a mission style toy chest for my son. The frame is solid cherry with cherry plywood panels.
I am looking for a fairly simple finish that would be easy to repair and...
