I have a Millers Falls equivalent to a Stanley #5, it's heavier than a Stanley by a little which I like. I've been really happy with it.
I'm guilty of not following up in project threads too, but darn, I was really excited to hear about this one.
PM me if you think you'd want a cam rest machined out or aluminum or brass.
Hello,
I'm starting in on the design of a sailing/solo canoe for messing about on rivers near Philadelphia, but also the occasional lake trip in the Adirondacks or jaunt in the Pamlico Sound. My...
I had a A3-31 at work for 7 years, I manage a university prototyping shop. All in all the A3-31 is a well made machine, Felder is great with support, always has been responsive and their technicians...
Hey Everyone,
I run a school shop, I'm partial to old equipment, but we're not really allowed to buy used things here, when replacing our large bandsaw I got a Laguna HD18" saw. I've worked on...
I adore the Northeaster Dory, how have things gone with this? Have you started or completed the build?
My bench is 60 inches long with 34.5" outside to outside legs, this leaves 12 of overhang on each side. At the time I was planning on installing a 9" Columbia face vise on the left front and I've got...
I've used a dial indicator in stand like machinist's use and the magnet blocks glued to a piece of QS wood from White's book "Care and Repair of ShopMachines" This is what Anthony Whitesell links to...
Success!
But I think I'm going to switch to white oak for the pegs. I had a lot of rejects from the DF fracturing along the soft growth rings. I've used oak before and it's better for this.
What saw is it? I've been thinking about getting a smallish old saw, or building one for cutting certain kinds of joints.
I'm doing the finish work on the door, it will be properly painted and I'll explain the maintenance and leave a little card with it.
I was afraid this was going to end with "bought a new saw", Happy to see a simple repair bring and old machine back to life!
I've done a few workbenches without glue, but for an entry door in a client's house I'm going overkill, glue and pegs. It's paint grade and this DF has good tight grain so pegs made from it should be...
Great, I'll do it that way, and learn from any problems I encounter. Now as a follow up, I'm debating about using DF as peg material or milling up something more homoginous and rot resistant like...
I've made some for a one of need via the Dunwell/Krenov/Luthier supply. If you dimension the wood carefully, and build some small miter sawing hooks for the bed and breast angles, and perhaps a...
Hey Everyone,
I'm building a dutch door out of CVG DF, As such most of the tenons are "normal" width, and I'm planning on two 5/16 or 3/8" drawbores for those spaced about 1 1/2" apart. My kick...
I have the combo set, 220/1000 and 4000/8000, the flattening stone isn't worth anything, I use 100 grit SiCarbide grit on a granite tile for flattening. The 220 goes out of flat very easily, I don't...
Nice one Tony.
Leather washers between the brass pin and body may help with the setting.
I use mechanical both mechanical calipers (mostly for turning) and dial or vernier for all other tight tolerance work, I have a 1" micrometer that sees little and specific use.
Like George, I...
I agree with you Tony, brass is just so nice to work that I'm really considering it. I may make two out of steel and do one out of brass and see how it holds up.
Steve, yes I've been in touch...
Hello Everyone,
I'm building some Mathieson style Drawer bottom planes, and thought I'd show the progress and eventual results.
I am looking into antique irons in either 3/16" or 1/4" wide or...
The one's I've used and made have been irregular enough that they don't chatter like that. I never had an issue with chatter in the 6 or so mortises I cut.
