Don't get me wrong -- being able to plane an edge absolutely true & square to the face, with hand tools, and without jigs, is a good skill to have. But just as a general goal, it seems like it's...
Wait! You mean that Derek has been using the A3 to dimension his Jarrah all this time, rather than hand planing it??!! I'm afraid that I'm going to have to take him down a notch from superhero...
My MF 185a has the actual diameters listed on the barrel, and the diameters are the same as those that Joe posted. search ebay for "drill points", and you'll find a number of listings
I had problems trying to upload images recently. Per Dave Anderson, files have to be smaller than 150kb to upload.
I had been wondering about this also. a little googling turned up this page, which talks about "reagent grade" nitric acid, and how to stain wood with it:...
Nice work on the carving, Mike! The plant bundle you're using for smoothing reminds me of a video I recently watched here:

It's a Korean craftsman using...
I have a few jointers -- an LV BU, a couple of round-sided bedrocks (607, 608), and a couple of woodies. I'm not very analytical about my planes. Some of them feel more like they're my kids, or...
It's a push drill, similar to my MF 185a (all silver). if you turn the top around to each numbered slot, a bit should fall out. if you cup your hand under the end while doing this, it will fall...
Nice job, Steve! In your other thread on this subject, you mentioned that at least some of the tenons would be wedged, and others pinned. Would you mind expanding on which you chose for the various...
If I had a million lives to live, one of them would be a woodworker with a full complement of power tools. Right now all I have is, literally, a 6'x10' space for my bench, tools, and wood. In this...
Wow, that is one ugly square. Looks like you can pick up a Starrett 12" combo with protractor & center heads for around $100 on ebay. I don't remember what I paid for mine (new) ten years ago. If...
Nice video, thanks for sharing. Googling, it seems that Ken died this past August.
Dave's flatsole is pretty darned awesome -- I was just using it the other day on the handle of a mallet I was making.
Yes, exactly. I moved from kings to the shaptons almost immediately. Give them a wipe with a piece of paper towel after each blade and they're good to go for the next one.
I do work freehand...
That norris adjuster works great in their BU planes -- how does it do in your woody?
I could be mistaken, but think the David's point was that PM-V11 steel (it is steel, isn't it?) can be sharpened well and quickly on oil stones. And I was just getting used to A2, dammit.
With my white-bread upbringing, I think I realize now what I missed out on: I think I needed vice.
But seriously, I don't find that my water stones (shapton pros) make more of a mess, or are more...
My Sargent VBM fits nicely. Here's a (slightly blurry) pic:

The only problem I have with this plane is that the depth adjuster works in opposite to the expected fashion. If I turn it...
I thought the same thing about "firmers" -- that they're square, not bevel edged. David says that they might be carpenter's chisels, but I don't get that. the (few) carpenters I've known didn't...
Way to score, Ron! Looks like a really nice set, for an excellent price. These are 12-13" long, from the looks of them? For comparison, I bought a set of (only) 4 Greenlees (1/4-1") for about $100...
There are photos with and without the side reliefs. It looks like the cast versions have the side reliefs, and the dovetailed ones are unmarked on the sides (which makes sense)
Brian -
the catalogs I have list bullnose planes in dovetailed steel, gunmetal, and cast iron -- no brass. Maybe yours is actually gunmetal? From the pics in the Lamport book, least some of those...
Thanks Dave, I'll have to remember that in the future!
Well, I scanned some of the catalogs and the patent app into pdfs, but I can't seem to upload these as attachments -- the uploads keep failing. Perhaps they're too big @ 2-3 MB each. If you PM me...
