Do you know of any good woodworkers near you? Most would he happy to teach you how to sharpen and set up the plane. One other thing I would suggest is to double check and make sure you're going with...
If all you want to do is ease corners and make small chamfers, I don't think it matters too much and would suggest that you consider vintage. There are several people here that rehab and sell planes...
I think I would try Pete ' s suggestion and see if that worked. If that doesn't work, salvage what you can and buy another piece of wood to finish with.
Couple of other considerations (at least for me) would be whether holdfasts are used much. If so, be sure to leave enough room between the bottom of the bench top and the top of your cabinets....
I don't have the wide blade attachment which is why I can only use the worksharp for irons up to 2 inches wide. For the wider irons, I use a honing guide on some PSA sandpaper to create/establish the...
I use a WS3000 for primary bevels on my irons and chisels up to 2 inches wide and I love it. It's quick and consistent. I usually work up to about the 400 grit and then switch to stones for a...
Well, I bought a lathe. Got a decent deal ($850) on a Nova 2024 DVR with the outboard attachment and base. It's missing the center for the headstock and the knock out bar, though. Now I need to buy a...
That sucks, but it happens. I bought a 5 1/2C a few years ago at a garage sale and giggled all the way home. Checked the mouth for nicks, checked the sole for flatness and pitting, and even checked...
If you are looking for a tool to only do rabbets and as long as the rabbits are no more than 1 inch wide, I suggest a Stanley 78 rabbet plane. They are plentiful and fairly inexpensive. You can also...
Where are you located? Auger bits for your brace should be really easy to find. I have tons.
I have that set and they are fantastic stoned
I have the LN 4 1/2 and love it. I also got the 50 degree frog and that is really nice.
My woodworking club brought Garrett Hack in to speak a few years ago. As part of his presentation, he planed a panel and then sanded half of it. After that, he took a cup of water and poured it onto...
I also think that MF planes are as good as Stanley's, provided we're talking about the older ones. I don't care for the 00 series. I will grab every 9 I can find, but never a 900.
I have had good luck with Tru-Oil. All you do is wipe it on with a rag or paper towel. Just keep adding coats until you get the finish you want. It's cheap, too.
Hi Ron,
As always, they are stunning. Guys like you are the reason guys like me end up with waaay more saws than we need. Keep up the good work.
You might want to post a "WTB" for a low angle block in the classifieds here. You might end up paying a couple bucks more, but you will be a lot more confident that you'll get a plane in good shape....
As mentioned, check carefully for cracks in the casting, particularly around the mouth. Also check the mouth to make sure there are no chips out of it. I usually take a straight edge with me to check...
I suggest you check out Dave's Shaves. They are a little pricey, but very, very nice.
Assuming the right size brace is being used, I think a brace is at least as quick as the electric. There's a woman who's in her mid- 70's in my hand tool group who tried a brace for the first time...
I got some of those a few years back at a garage sale. They work great, but they get real heavy real fast. Nice score, though.
Perhaps you could donate some pieces to the church and let them either auction or raffle them off. If it's auctioned, the winners get pieces they wanted at a price they can afford , the church gets...
I suggest that you keep an eye open for a 5 in the classifieds here. Yes, it will cost more initially, but you could probably get one that has been rehabbed, tuned and sharpened for $50 delivered to...
I have 3 boards that were labeled as Boxwood, but they seemed too large to me so I sent a chunk to the Forestry Service for identification. Report tells me it's actually Calycophyllus something,...
