John's pics and description of the shapes are right on target. You will find the Sorby, Henry Taylor, OneWay and Woodcut gouges have parabolic flutes. I am pretty sure the new Stuart Batty gaouges...
Baxter, that is a very nice piece. I really like this one, the shape and the dye job are very well done. The sandblasting really lets the dye show off the grain of that oak.

That looks like the Siberian Elm I have turned. The Siberian Elm gets lots of burls and it moves and warps like crazy as it dries.

I have used compressed air for clearing shavings while coring but with the lathe stopped. Today, I will be coring a couple of large Maple blanks and I will try it both with consatnt air and...
Alan, did you remove the wheel shroud? It is not needed with the CBN wheel as the metal wheel will not fracture and hurl pieces at you.

Richard, you have done a wonderful job on this bowl. A beautiful shape and the dye / shoe polish work is excellent. Well Done Sir!!!!

David, that is an interesting story about the tree and you have made a very nice bowl from the wood. I really like the nice curve, the foot and the contrast of heart and sap wood. Well done, sir!

Mike, check out his thread. I ended up mounting the PVC box to a block of wood that had Rare Earth magnets monted in it. I worked great. Powermatic and Oneway both offer a remote start/stop that is...

Jim, I jumped to no conclusion about your abilities or experience. I simply see no need for a pinned tool rest. I should have formed my response as a question so I might learn why one is beneficial....
Jim, I am not sure why you would need to use a fulcrum and that much force if you present a sharp tool to the wood properly.

I saw some video of a guy trying an inspection camera while hollowing, about a year ago. Like, Steve said, there was way too much dust and shavings to see anything while hollowing. Using it off of...
Mike, get the Hickory and turn it but like Gary says, it turns great when wet and is super hard when dry. We have Shag Bark Hickory and a couple other Hickory's that grow around here. Hickory is...
Clint said what I had been trying to come with for two days.

Jack, you have done a great job on a form that shows the beauty of a wonderful piece of wood. Very well done, sir.

Ryan,
I hollow by hand and I have the Monster Articulated system. I usually do all of the roughing by hand and about 50% of the time I use the Monster to finish the pieces. When I bought my...
Welcome, Art, you will enjoy this forum. Mike is correct, the Vortex is Strong but you can never have too many turning tools. I am a double Bozo, I have two 5 gallon buckets of turning tools.

Looks like a pretty good deal to me. My Oneway lathe has to be power cycled if you use the emergency stop button and I have turned on others that are like that. It all depends on how the controller...
Jack, all of these are great. If I had to pick a favorite, a difficult thing to do, it would be number 2. The wood is beautiful as are all of the forms. Well done!!!!!
Dale
Kathy, the sphere is very well done and the box is very well done, the combination is excellent. Great Job!!!!
Dale
Wally, thanks for your service and thanks for starting this thread. I also had some of my Navy buddies die in combat. I think of them often and especially on Memorial Day.
