Hi Mike,
The only non-blasphemous comment I can think of is
HOLY MOLY!
Tom,
When I want to "pop the grain" on something but don't want that yellowing that BLO adds I use Lee Valley's Polymerized Tung Oil. It is expensive, but it takes very little of it for the kind...
Joe,
These are not furniture, but they are old and Tuscan, so they might still provide enough flavor for inspiration.
HTH,
Tom

Hi Chris,
Sorry for being a bit obtuse.
Note: The following is based on my extremely slight knowledge -- about as close to nil as possible -- of the principles of engineering and the...
Hmm...
I have no idea whether the chair is happy or not.
I will grant your point that the down-turned curves are not necessary, but then neither is all that empty space underneath the...
Exactly right.
Sigh...
Very closely related, from what I understand. In fact, it's often referred to as "Argentine lignum vitae."
It's extremely dense and heavy, and so tightly...
Just a bit more finishing and a tiny bit of tidying up and these will be done.
I never seem to have time even to start any "real", i.e., cabinet-sized, projects, but I'm having a lot of fun with...
Greg,
I didn't get in on that one, but I did order three planes from Steve Knight, (Knight Toolworks), during his recent  50% off  sale.
I needed something high angle for...
What Jim said.
But heck, for $.50 don't worry about it!
Not until after you cut and grind the initial bevel. The steps from here are:
1. harden
2. temper
3. clean off scale (if any) and polish
4. sharpen
5. use
6. post gloat!
You can say that again Dave!

Andy:
Another thing to keep in mind is that the oil is likely to catch fire when you put the steel into it, so having some sort of...
Only three of them. Two are shorties, with just over an inch of usable blade left. One of those has no breaker. The third is not designed to take a breaker -- no hole, no slot, no threading, no...
Andy,
About what size are you looking for?
I've got a few oldies that not only would look great in a shop-built plane, but they are very thick and made from laminated steel, just like the...
I have to agree with Steve.
I think the only problem with your original design was that the legs were a bit to chunky and too angular.
Here is a quickie suggestion for how the legs could be...
Uh ... Um ... Hm ...
That about sums it up for me. :o
I like the two bentwood chairs best. They have an organic feel to them that I find appealing. I'm not sure how comfortable they would be to sit in, however, as they appear to lack lower back support....

Hi Louis,
I'm not sure why you can't see them, but I'll post them again in a different format so you can for sure. (I think.)

Will there be refreshments?
The long Swan parer is the only one I'm seriously considering keeping.
These are not quite finished, but I'm done for the day so I thought I'd share them 'in progress."
From the top down they are:
Stanley 750
Stanley 720
3 James Swan
I spent some quality time in the shop today.

And in the kitchen too...

To "get" the iron sharpened? As in by someone else?
Tsk, tsk, tsk...
Clearly John M has yet to explain to you the joys of the Lee Valley Mk II sharpener/system... ;)
Another thing that will help is buying a bunch more planes. That way you get much more practice taking them apart and putting them back together, so you will always remember where everything goes. ...
