I missed "coming out of the kiln". I assumed incorrectly it was going onto the pile green, to be air dried.

I agree. I don't think this is a safety warning; it's a warning that it requires UV light to properly cure.
Wow, very striking. While in figure it's leopard, in shape, it's all lion.
Maple, ironically, can have this variation - especially when it starts to decay near the center. You should also look for "flamed" box elder. American walnut and cherry will have significant color...
No, that's a viable option. I did that and it worked fine. However, leave good space so you can occasionally blow out any bugs or debris that collects inside. Both can attract bugs.
The sap...
I've used System 3 T-88. It has about 45 minutes open time. I recommend it.
However, you mentioned "complicated" glue up. Beware that 2 part epoxies require mixing, and are high viscosity, so...
Google "Table top buttons". I've used this method a few times. You can use stainless steel screws to attach them. You need an easy way to route the slots though.
I use a Domino.

To test a panel joint, I slide post it notes between the joint at various points and then dry clamp them with "moderate force". If I can't pull any out, I consider it good.
It will turn silver. Washing and oiling will delay the decay and possibly splitting.
On outdoor furniture you can also epoxy any end grain - especially the feet.
Don't underestimate the...
I don't think the width of the planer has much to do with it's ability to handle short stock. Anything under 12" is a challenge to run through any planer. I'd make a carrying sled for this purpose....
Most ergonomic for me is recessed handles on the underside and felt or rubber feet to give a shadow line, help it sit flat better, and reduce slip and spin.
Another idea that has served well is a...
Here's a white oak bench I made 10 years ago. I finished it initially with something - I can't remember. That lasted 2 seasons, and started flaking off over the following 3 seasons.
Most of it...
I'm pretty comfortable with dyeing and toning. I've done a fair bit of it, including matching and layering for color depth. I agree, the possibilities are endless. It's just a ton of work. I...
Thanks for the follow up. I learned a lot on this thread. Mostly that coloring is not something I want to do ;) Thanks for the Minwax OMP review. I have to try it. Not to ask too much of you,...
I agree with Brian's words. Top notch work, John and amazing attention to detail as always.
Price drop to $100.
Here's a vote to leave it as it is. I think it looks great and I wouldn't have thought about the overhang unless you told me. Your grain match on the top, your leg splay and taper, the carving. ...
Any finish will work as long as you apply only a single coat. I am partial to oil based varnish because it applies conveniently with a rag and can be rubbed in, and dries completely.
Figure increases price
Width increases price
Thickness increases price
$100/bf is very high, but possible for unique or rare wood.
It has been this hobbyist's experience that the most prized...
I use "9955 5" Abranet Grip Faced (Hook and Loop) Pad Protector - 5 per pack". It really saves the backer. I am still using the original backing pad on my sander (prob 10 yrs old by now).
Arm R Seal is a better product IMHO. I experience it to be more durable. It applies about as easily as Minwax's wipe on poly.
Your other option is to purchase full strength Minwax polyurethane...

I originally finished my basement without a permit and added a bathroom that I DIY'd. The issue for me is not the quality of the work, but the liability. In my town, once you are code approved in my...
Waterlox Original Sealer Finish (make sure you get "Original Formula" not "VOC formula") is can be applied exactly as you do your ArmRSeal. It's just a wiping phenolic varnish. High Gloss Finish...
My money's on the clamping. If you are able to get good results @ 90, your blade should be able to perform @ 45.
@ 45, though, less of your finger pressure keeps the piece registered to the...
