Thank you, John & Ken, I also found Peachstate Lumber. They are all in the northern part of Atlanta. Hope to find one in the southern part just to save some driving time.
I'm new to the area and would like some recommendations for plywood suppliers in the south Atlanta area (Peachtree city, Newnan...) Thanks.
With the DMT, all you need is an extra-coarse, an extra-fine, and a leather strop with green compound from TFWW. Don't waste your money on DMT fine or XX-fine.
I went to a local Tandy leather shop and bought $10 worth of scraps. I made 3 strops and still have enough to make a few more. It was quite possibly the best $10 I've ever spent on tool/supplies....
If your primary concern is with shaping plane blades and chisels, the Tormek is really overkill (and slow). I'd use a T7 sometimes for turning tools but mostly hit a grinder when I need to reshape a...
It's like a bicycle's training wheels - cumbersome and not worth the effort. I owned one for a few years and only used once or twice.
I've used a Smith's diamond bench stone 11.5" x 2.5" for about 2 years. It was about $50 but it's $60 now on Amazon. Good size, long lasting, and sturdy/firm.
I actually tried Paul Sellers' mortising approach with a LN mortise chisel, a firmer bevel edge chisel, and a Ray Iles mortise chisel. I can say without any reservation that the firmer bevel edge...
Thanks, Mike, for offering your very detailed evaluation. How much longer do you think the PM-11 chisel last as compared to A2/O1 chisel (LN, Blue Spruce)? LV mentioned that the PM-11 is especially...
I like a flat faced chisel because it is more predictable to me than a random back bevel. Other than the slightly longer initial prep time, I don't see anything wrong with it. Yes, you can get a...
I have both sets from LN and the newer Stanley SW and don't find them tippy at all. I've actually rehandled the Stanley SW to add about 1" to their overall length. I find the added length makes it...
Most of the time one would get some small tear out spots that can be cleaned up easily with a scraper. 45-50* are probably most suitable for most NA species. Beside shortening edge life, it requires...
Highly recommend you try one out first. One could get an old Stanley and turn it into a good user for $40 but it is probably best done with some experience.
I've made a few floats out of 1/8" O1 stock. It's pretty straight forward, especially if one is also making H&R irons since there would be plenty of scrap. Otherwise I'd go with Lie Nielsen floats...
I'm mostly do spindle turnings (for now) and would like your opinion on it. I've been using just Norton 3X papers but am looking for more flexible materials. Thanks.
I don't think the Lee Valley green compound will do much good after your 10K stone because it is (was?) considerably coarser than your 10K stone. I used to struggle to understand why stropping with...
Stropping is inexpensive, effective, and efficient. You can attain & keep really sharp edge for a long time with stropping before having to return to stones. I've used an expensive 10K Chosera stone...
I have used both. On the flesh side up strop, I planed down a bit and found that it is a good compromise between firmness and ability to hold the compound. I spent $10 at Tandy leather store for a...
It's step #3 that used to get me...Otherwise, it is taking end grain shavings so make sure the edge is super sharp and take light cuts.
I'd say keep your stone set up and add a hand strop if you don't already use it. I doubt that 1/4/8 set up would be a much better improvement. The sharpest, most durable chisel edge I got was on a...
It's hard to say what you did wrong. For a block plane, I'd like just a straight edge across.
I'd fix it by jointing the edge - position it 80-85* vertical on the 1000 stone (bevel down) and move...
I converted probably half of my chisels to convex bevel, mostly the smaller sizes. My technique is a little different but the end result is the same. For me, the primary benefit is speed - both the...
Wipe on a coat of sealer shellac and gel stain...I'm don't think the oil-type conditioner is very effective.
The most versatile one is probably the eclipse-style honing guide...No honing guide would automatically give you a nice camber profile without a proper technique. I own a variety of guides but use...
It looks like you've decided on what chisels to get. May I suggest another factor one should consider in choosing/using an edge tool: sharpening efficiency. If one could resharpen a chisel in a...
