I can attest to Johnny's skill at making split nuts... he made many for me, and they were simply excellent! My method is for the poor souls such as myself who don't have the proper machine tools......

Yes, and what fun! Worse yet, I think it was all my fault... Ended up going through a full site upgrade to repair it. Anyway I've got the thing up now, it should be up to stay (famous last words)....
Here's mine so far:
Shop Progress
I've done all of it myself except for the foundation. It is still a work in progress, though - I've yet to complete the interior... but because I have done...

I believe what you have there is known as a table saw, believe it or not.... Gary at toolemera press has been going on about them lately:

Ah, there's another project also I need to do. They look great, Louis!
I've built many many sawhorses over the days, but these dedicated saw benches really look to be the way to go... Make...
One option is to use planemaker Bill Carter's method of cutting off a chisel square and hardening it -

Would you agree, that the 1/8" would be better to have first? That seems counter intuitive to me. I would think 3/16" would be better as it is a little wider and would be more suitable since it would...
The best deal, and the first two to get would be the side float and the bed float, in that order - but you also will need an edge float. The side float will allow you to get into the shoulder, and...
Yup... I use an old Rival Hot Pot Express, which can be bought new for about $12 - or I've found one in a thrift store for $1:

I don't know about where to get Liberon brand - I think that woodfinishupply.com may sell it... but I don't have experience with that company. There are several sources of good quality granular hide...
It looks like it will work to me! My first saw vise was a couple pieces of plywood and sticks with a piano hinge I stuck into my vise. Sure didn't look pretty, but got the job done.
Keep up the...
I love your work, Louis! I'm still planning to build that vise of yours someday...
I'm glad to see you get interviewed here, it's very cool...
Keep it up!

It's not all that hard to bend the back... or to hammer it home. It took me a couple tries to get it right though... That article is a bit dated, as now I use a hydraulic press which takes all the...
As Mike suggested, just try to re-position the blade within the back. Sometimes, the way the blade is sitting in the back distorts the blade ever so slightly... If that doesn't fix it, then go on to...
It was great having you over, Dan! Enjoy the saw vise - it's the same one I learned on many moons ago...

Here's something I wrote a while back on hollow grind vs. micro-bevels. I think the graphics are pretty self-explanatory... There's no appreciable difference between the two, when done properly - at...
Just to be fair, that quote is from an article on Cameron Miller's site, www.handplane.com - the actual interview with Bill Carter where he mentions this is located here (I've updated my page because...
I won't disagree, Alan. I do find that practice is the best way to improve, along with a good knowledge of the tool being used. I try not to be dismissive of any method really - if somebody has a way...
Sorry for the rambling nature of the following...
Difficulty in starting cuts can be from a few different things...

Thanks, John!
I hope it serves you well for many, many years. :) They are fun to make, too... :D

There are safe back cant saw files available through a few outlets - I've bought some from doityourself.com... Might want to check there.
Speaking of kangaroos and rip saws...
I've noticed that Australia seems to have more than it's share of 3-1/2 and 4 point rip saws... I wonder if it is because of the different woods, different...
I've been known to make a saw or two... :D
