Pecan will gray stain just like maple here in Georgia. Pecan is a hickory. All hickories have nuts.
It is gray stain, and oxidation reaction of the sugars in the wood from drying too slow in high humidity. Just discoloration, does not affect the wood properties.
Sticker the boards with 3/4" x 3/4" stickers. Put some weight on top of the stack. Put stack outside under cover and let them air dry for about 4 months. A garage is OK, too, or a shed with open...
Nothing surprises me anymore when it comes to trees, people, and yards.
Love it! Very beautiful.
I believe that air dried is the way to go.
It would definitely do more to minimize wood movement, i.e. expansion.
When wood is left laying flat on a surface, only one side gets air. If the wood is not in equilibrium with the environment, one side will gain or lose a little moisture, but the other side cannot. ...
It will not get any drier than that if air dried outside under cover. You could skip plane the boards and sticker them inside a climate controlled space and let them acclimate for 6 - 8 weeks, then...
I never intentionally quartersaw walnut. I have had very few customers ask for it. I go for the best, cleanest boards.
Yes, water oak is one of the red oaks.
Don't believe that it is a red elm. Red elm has interlaced, scaly bark. Also, the latewood pores in elm are arranged in wavy bands. Very distinctive. A close-up of the end grain will show them...
Probably not water oak in CT. Could be pin oak. Since it is in a yard and probably planted, could be one of several red oak species. A leaf would solve the mystery.
It is a red oak. Very likely water oak.
Thank you, Jeff. It is so hard to get the logs.
thewoodyard.com. They will ship.
It is spruce.
I have a lot of experience with it. I find it to be very beautiful. If it is an old tree and has good heartwood formation, it can be spectacular.
It is difficult to dry straight. It cups...
Bark looks like ash. Broken record: need close up pic of end grain.
The beetle that you see coming out of green lumber that is drying is the ambrosia beetle. Once the lumber begins to dry, they leave permanently. The lyctid powderpost beetle infests dry hardwood,...
I agree with the others. Certainly looks like white pine, not SYP. Longleaf has dense, very dark latewood.
It is normal. Sands out very very easily. The lack of tear out with these spiral heads make those little parallel lines on the boards a non-issue for me.
Latex paint is not useless as an end sealer, but it is close. Invest in some Anchorseal.
Yes, air dry it first. 4 - 6 months would be good.
