Great for rough shaping, or for flattening stones. Not fine enough for fine honing.
I make constant use of a "coarse" (blue) DMT diamond stone to flatten my Norton water stones.

Bought a Disston #12, filed rip, from Jon Zimmer:

Came clean, sharp, and nicely set:

The medallion seems to indicate a manufacture date somewhere between 1896 and 1917:

Mine's a hand-tool only shop, unless you count my bench grinder, only used to do rough grinding of blades. Otherwise, not even an electric drill.
Grind rough bevel on a Baldor bench grinder with a Veritas toolrest; hone on Norton water stones, sometimes freehand, sometimes with a LV MKII.
I have the ECE block plane, a LV block plane, and an LN block plane. The ECE and the LV sit on the shelf.
I have the Bluespruce chisels, and a set of the LN mortise chisels -- different beast, I know, but (I think) the same handle and overall size as their bevel-edge cousins.
Both are spectacularly...
Any hope that Lie-Nielsen will come out with one of those in bronze? Or Bridge City with one in Juara™ Wood?
Many thanks Greg. My tool set will be very different (I'm on the Neanderthal forum for a reason!), but I'm glad to hear it's a reasonable proposition. I'll find that article.
The steel will definitely make a big difference in the length of time from one sharpening to the next -- this will be, in my opinion, the big advantage of going to something with A1, or O1, or...
My shop is a one-time garage, shed-roofed, sturdily but crudely built by the owners a long time ago. I've put windows--professionally built, unprofessionally installed--in some walls. Right now I...
For paddle-making, consider a shaving horse instead of a bench:

I can't picture where the dovetail is, or what gets drawbored. Diagram...? Also can't picture how all this accomodates movement. Is the top vertical grained?
works for me. works for Rob Cosman.
Your two 1000 grit stones, after wearing through similar sharpening, will be worn in similar ways -- i.e., both convex or both concave. Empirically, if you rub them in a more or less circular...
I intend to buy the Grammercy bow saw. For the moment, I have a "Continental Frame Saw" from Highland Hardware with a good Putsch 24" "Scrolling blade":

Well, not really. If you rub the two stones together so the bumps on one slide around and the bumps on the other slide around, pretty soon all the bumps on both are worn off...and both stones are...
A few considerations:
(1) wood movement: the roubo bench, for example, achieves its solidity at the expense of accomodating wood movement -- so 24" of vertical grain wood provides a quarter inch...
I actually like the Charlesworth video (as well as the Cosman and the Schwarz). What the Charlesworth video does is give a systematic -- very systematic -- way to handle the tendency of jointing...
The sole common denominator seems to be you -- or, perhaps, your workbench, though I can't offhand see how the bench would come into it.
Of the high end saws, my (limited) experience would propel me to Wenzloff or Adria. While I've found LN planes to be the best planes around, LN saws are no longer, in my opinion, the best saws...
Clinton, many thanks. I hope you set a precedent for pictures of wood. I think I'll do the same with some woods that are very regional to the Pacific Northwest. (Garry Oak for example, and...
My shop also has no water, but I've never found that a problem. I just hold my Norton stones out the window.
The Lie-Nielsen version (if you want one UNrusted):

My experience has been that using a bad saw always made me feel like an even worse woodworker than I really was. The first time I used a good saw I discovered that I could cut straight lines after...
...whereas here on the Raincoast, we regularly get to see our shops converted to pools.
