I agree with John, it takes about 6 months before you really understand and feel comfortable operating a CNC. I bought my CNC 4 years ago and now I use it for everything, but there is a learning...

The learning curve to operate a CNC is anywhere between 1 to 6 month (one month being fast learner)
Most CAD (design) software generates the G-Code for you, you just need to find the correct post processor. What design software are you using?

I am having sooooo much fun with the laser engraver, below are some pictures of an old English pub (front only). Nearly all the parts are cut with the laser. The size is 18" wide x 24" tall.
I cut a bunch of miniature row of houses in corrugated cardboard for my wife miniature club, length is 3" long x 1" high. You can compare it against a AA battery.

I didn't think about using finger joints, it would have made it much easier to glue up.
I laser cut some pieces for a miniature planter for my wife 14" long x 1" high and 1" deep, the material thickness is 1/8". It did burn a bit but is going to get painted, I am still learning about...

I have changed my technique for making ADA signs from using the CNC router to a laser engraver, after dialing in the laser engraver I was able to engrave a .032" deep pocket for the letters.
