Do you have Firefox set to delete cookies when you exit Firefox? Check Tools -> Options -> Privacy & Security -> Cookies & Site Data.
Make sure cookies are kept until they expire.

This should also work...
Right click on the desktop. Select View. Make sure that Auto Arrange and Align icons to grid are both NOT checked. You can then move the icons where you want them.
