Hey folks,
I'm about done with my degree and finally got a "real" job. It's for a little software company east of Seattle founded by some guy named Gates. Anyway, I've found I've hardly had...

Hi Keith,
Did you figure anything out? I typically make the lead-ins myself, but I just got a metal-cutting job (for a rocket skin!) that has a huge number of holes. I did find that the...
Nice! I tried asking Kern about getting a drop-through hole on our table for doing things like this when we ordered it, but their tables were prefabbed and precision ground. We've had a couple...
What type of plywood are you using? Baltic birch may char less than something from the hardware store.
Does the laser have an air assist? I recently had something happen like this with our Kern. The cutting head came a bit loose from the linear bearing, and the air assist would intermittently lift...
Lucida Handwriting
Is that a Weber State logo?
And it oxidizes more thoroughly if you add some gallium and mercury to keep things going: http://youtu.be/lfBfKIHYY2g?t=36s
Do you have a brand name or anything? You might be able to find an MSDS that lists the ingredients.
The first-order formula you're asking for would be: [horiz. rescale factor] = [object diameter]/[logo width] * arcsin([logo width]/[object diameter]). This is only going to get the width of the...
http://www.whatfontis.com/ found it, after some cleanup of the image. It's Kenan & Kel: http://www.ffonts.net/Kenan-Kel.font?text=WINTER%20CARNIVAL
I just ran across an ad for these folks today: aplazer.com. It's an interesting idea and reminds me of ShopBot's Handibot (https://handibot.com/).
This looks like it was hand lettered.
Our Kern has one- to two-second delay after it's been off for a while. After learning this the hard way, I now fire a defocused test pulse until I see it burn the paper covering the honeycomb every...
How much air do people use when cutting acrylic? The recommended settings from Kern have us run at <10psi, or <5psi for their "flame-polished" settings.
I've never had a real fire, but our...
Would anodized aluminum tags work?
It should work okay as long as your bends are smaller than about 40° (the critical angle for total internal reflection in acrylic). If you need a bigger bend then that and don't want the light...

If you want to be able to trust the test, you might want to try some control samples, e.g. some known PVC/vinyl and some known non-PVC/vinyl, just to make sure that you're doing it right.
David - PMMA is acrylic. If it's not okay to cut, then a whole lot of folks on here are in trouble :).
It's been mentioned on here a few times, but here's a video: http://vimeo.com/1615418
If you do a Google search it looks like people have done this (e.g. http://www.adafruit.com/blog/2013/10/25/laser-cut-el-panel-eye-piece-electronichalloween/). There's nothing obviously dangerous in...
No, we just have a 2.5" lens. It looks like the beam spot (or its effective size) from our laser is less than 1/(300dpi) ~= 0.003 in wide, because if I engrave wood at 300dpi I can see ridges left...
We've been completely happy with our machine and the support we've gotten from Kern. I think their only weak spot would be that the software isn't refined as maybe Epilog's or Trotec's might be, but...
