Wow, that's a large saw! I wouldn't use this one for re-sawing, just for larger curves a coping saw is too small to do. Most of what I've built to date has required no re-sawing... I'll cross that...

I have a 1970's model Marples 12" turning saw on its way as we speak. I've always lusted after a band saw, but that's not the direction I'm headed. All hand tools for me. I'll spend the difference...
Thanks, Tony! Just what I was needing!
Mr. Wilson, I half expected to find a video of Saint Underhill chopping some cabriole legs with some form of farm implement. But, I did not find a video of him making any cabriole legs. I have seen...
Will be searching for turning saw recommendations. I wonder if the 12" bow saw is large enough to cut curves in 12/4 stock?
Fidel,
That is what I had considered doing given all my tools are geared for straight work. I had seen that done on a smaller scale for a lamb's tongue. More clean up than a bow saw it seems.
Ok, I've done some searching, but haven't seen a clear solution yet. How were cabriole legs cut before bandsaws?
I can look at the wood removed and imagine bow saw (giving me an excuse to hunt...
Thought I would post a few pictures as the project wraps up.
I built a bench from 1-by SYP that I had left over from a flooring project. I think the boards were 5.5" by 3/4". I glued up 32 or so of them and ended up with a 4" thick top after the ugly glue-up...
I believe that could be worked in somehow - thanks for the idea!
I mortised in 3 butt hinges and screwed them all down. Quality from the Borg was lacking, as one of the screws' heads twisted off while tightening. They were rather short screws to begin with. ...
Thanks, Brian!
Here are a few alternative hinging solutions that I found to solve the angle issue.
Thank you gentlemen very much for the input on the hinges! One thing about it being a slant top desk, and perhaps I did not think carefully enough, is that I beveled the edge of the lid so it would...
Thanks! Learning lots putting this one together.
The slant top desk is coming along. Since it will be painted, I made the top from poplar, and it ended up being a bit heavy for butt hinges (I tried them, mortised them in and attached, but the...
I follow Derek's philosophy. I'd rather make something as high a quality as I am able (which isn't saying much at this time for me).
I do use a divider and bevel gauge to layout my dovetails,...
That's so yesterday. I'm about to roll out my "bench on a bench on a bench". It's a smallish bench that can be held securely in a Moxon vise which is in turn held to your regular bench top with...
The project I'm working on now has called for a fair bit of mortising, and I have been learning what I saw Mr. Under hill do, which is start a bit out from the near side of the mortise with the bevel...
Made a bit of progress tonight. Joined the sides with the drawer dividers (probably not the correct term). Not sure why the photo is posting sideways though. Thanks, Brian and Kent, for the advice!
Since I don't build from measured drawings or use a tape or rule to measure, I would guess that the sides are about 16" tall in the back and 10" tall in the front, as I wanted space to do two...
Im not certain, yet. I had thought about building a table with the same dimensions as the box, then adding a trim skirt around the bottom of the box which would overlap the bottom of the box and fit...
Thanks! So a "housed" mortise and tenon is simply not a through tenon?
I did watch Roy Underhill's videos on making his version of the desk. Awesome. I had initially wanted to dovetail the...
Thanks, Brian. That's the direction I was leaning, including draw boring. Since the box I'm making is taller than the one in the photo, I would do three or four tenons into each leg.
What is...
Sort of like this, but not inset...
I'm building a teacher's slant top lecture/ standing writing desk and have a question. I have four "legs" about 1.5" square that will also serve as the stiles or corners for the upper box portion. ...
