Does anyone know of any spindle turning classes near Southwest VA, East TN, or Western NC? I can do basic roughing, tapers, and tenons, but need help learning how to make more advanced shapes like...
I got 75 board feet of 8/4 hickory from Steve Wall Lumber today. It's so much nicer than what I had before.
Patrick, some of those streaks do, but not all. What you describe sounds like what I'm seeing though and makes sense.
There's not a lot of choice in my area, it's pretty rural.
My Woodturners Wonders CBN wheels came with a warning not to use the V arm for SRGs. I guess because of that.
The dealer I got this from isn't real specific on grades, I'm just assuming it would likely be one of the common grades.
Here's some pics of what I'm dealing with. I was hoping to get rungs from...
Thanks, my experience so far is closer to Jeff's. I'm hoping I can get some more like what Lee and Jim described. I love the look and I'm doing hickory bark seats, so it goes together really well....
I'm using Hickory for the first time to build some chairs. I purchased what I assume was Common grade 8/4 a few weeks ago from a small local lumber dealer. The amount of defects in it is really...
Thanks for the tips. I'm taking a class in August, so hopefully that will help. There's a club nearby that I'm going to check out too. I'm in a pretty rural area.
I recently purchased a lathe to speed up production of chair parts. I've been shaping them by hand up until this point. The only tools I bought so far are the roughing gouge, skew, and bedan. ...
We moved to a much larger house in 2006 and needed a lot more furniture. We bought several items from Broyhill's Attic Heirlooms collection. It's actually impressively built. It's all solid oak...
Just wondering if anyone in the Tricities TN or Southwest VA area who might be willing to give me some spindle turning pointers? I'm signed up for a beginning lathe class in August, but was hoping...
I ended up going with the Grizzly G0462. It's supposed to be delivered tomorrow.

I guess I misunderstood. I'm sure I've read multiple times that hide glue is transparent under finishes. I do try and scrub, scrape, and sand around the joints, but it's tough to get to some spots...
I've started using Tried and True Original on my post and rung chairs along with Old Brown Glue. In the past, I used BLO and Titebond Liquid Hide Glue. I've noticed that the finish is lighter...
A used one showed up online nearby. It's listed as a Delta 46-716. I can't find that one, but see a 46-715. It looks almost unused at $800. Is that a decent model and price?
Thanks guys, I may forgo the 45" length since that is a project for future me. If that was the case, is there a budget lathe you would recommend? I know the used market is a good suggestion,...
Any recommendations for a budget lathe for spindle turning? I have no desire to turn bowls, so I don't need anything related to that. For the chairs I make, it's mostly front legs and rungs, max of...
I've got their worm-drive style M18. It's incredibly powerful. I'm selling both my corded saws after using it. The only knock on it is the weight.
I have that same saw. The only real issue I had was when I was ripping a bunch of 10/4 ash slabs for my bench. I actually stopped the blade a few times. No problems with it otherwise.
I just got a sliding bevel from them. It's very well made from what I can tell.
I bought this one from Amazon a couple of months ago:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BB2SNLO/
It works much better than the DMT coarse plate I was using. I had let my stones go for too...
Here's a pic of the democratic chair seat, I'm pretty sure it is yellow instead of white.

The stick chair wasn't too bad, just a lot of tear out. I had to use the scraper and sander...
I'm simultaneously making Curtis Buchanan's Democratic Chair and Christopher Schwarz's Curved Back Stick Chair. This is my first time carving a seat. I bought what I thought was white pine, but...
