I was just contemplating this. I think I'll do just that.
OK. One more question for you :) . How would you suggest joining it? My first thought was just another tenon into the short aprons on the side. For reference, the aprons and this longitudinal support...
which is why I want it to be able to hold up to 4 adults.
I am trying to make sure it could withstand 4 adults; I am not really expecting to ever have that many using it at once. In reality this bench is going to be used by 2 kids with the occasional extras...
So how would you improve it? Wider tenons or something else?
Thanks, Pat.
Would you suggest removing those smaller cross supports and replacing them with another full length long one? Or would it be better to put one cross support in the middle and a...
Yes the apron is 2" right now. I think my wife would rather have a smaller table than 4" aprons. I'm sure I could get 2.75 without her even noticing. That might help a bit. :p
I didn't even notice...
As far as material goes - it is going to be White Ash. The top of the bench (and table for that matter) will be joined every 8 inches to the apron using these Z fasteners I have had good luck with...
This is what my gut tells me. I am trying to assume the bench could have 800 pounds on it, but in reality it probably won't have but 500 at one time in the center. that 500 should be distributed...
I guess I am not even sure what my options are
Hi Ralph, I enjoy your blog :)
I have a Record 044, a Stanley 45 and 46. The 45 isn't in usable condition yet and I doubt it ever will be. I picked it up at a garage sale last summer for $40 and...
OK, so in what form? The aprons aren't enough then?
I am going to be building a new dining table and bench for our house. It is a simple design - 8' long with slightly tapered legs and a bench to match. I am a little worried about sag in the bench. I...
I don't really care where it was made as long as it is of good quality :). What do you see about the British one that could injure you? (Compared to the other one)
I would like to make one, but it would be a good year until I could get to it :/

I am contemplating getting either this one or the one from TFWW. I know the TFWW bow saw is good, but has anyone used this one?
I knew the plane was only made until '58 but that logo tidbit is news to me! So it dates sometime between '20 and `58. At least that narrows it down
Picked this up last night from a former cabinet maker in my area. The japanning on it is nearly half gone, but otherwise it is in fine condition. Does anyone know a good way to date it?

That is great, Lowell! Happy Birthday! I hope you have a great time with friends & family today.
Sure, but it will be a a few hours. There are no panels behind the doors. It is one long open cabinet and you can't close it off. Side them in the middle and the ends open, make sense?
For me, a good square, saw, chisel and mallet, plane, and knife
Measuring tools are quite helpful, but I don't know if I would say essential. I have been skipping exact measurements in favor of...
It is supported on both ends as well as 3 points along the middle.
See the vertical support on the back? It doubles as a shelf support and vertical support for the top. There are two more at the...
Thanks! I brushed on 4 coats of white milk paint and then 3 coats of polycrylic. It looks sprayed though. My wife is my toughest critic and can't find a brush mark on it :) The top is stained,...
Yeah. I made it from flat aluminum bar stock and pulley wheels
