    A 'Dunno' bowl ..............

because I 'dunno' what the heck it's made of.

This one was started at Dennis P's house when we went down there on vacation to meet Dennis, Mark Cothren, Joe Meazle, and families.

While I was roughing it I managed to rip off the tennon 2 times, or was it three???? (Mark? LOL)

I have no clue of the wood it was made out of..but...if Dennis or Mark have too much laying around.......Christmas is coming up soon!

It's 8 3/4"w x 3 1/2"h x 1/4"t and has 1 coat of gel poly on it so far. There is a spot on the bottom inside where I guess a limb was growing and a few cracks that I left in for 'Character'....

  3. Well, I "dunno" either... but I suspect it may be some of that Poplar he brought from way down south in the Bammy swamps...

    Great looking bowl, Joe!

    Thanks for the pictures!

Well, if you ever come across another Dunno Tree, chunk it up, because that stuff is real pretty.

Joe, that's NOT a Dunno bowl! That's a Beautiful Bowl straight from the Beautimus Maximus tree! That's a knockout! Great form, as well and, if you schmucked up the chucking on it, sure can't tell it! Looks magnificent! Me likes!!!

Joe, curious: Did you use any oil (BLO, tung, etc...) prior to the gel? If so, which one and how long before you hit it with the gel finish? Again, really nice!

Nice looking bowl there Joe. How hard is it to use the gel finish? I have read about using it on small turnings such as pens and pencils. Is it feasible for small projects like that or should i revert back to an oil/shellac(sp) type of finish?

Good lookin wood AND BOWL. The color tends me to believe Box Elder, but the grain pattern says no it ain't! So it's still Dunno Wood!

    Thanks everyone!

    John........
The bowl is naked under the poly. I put it on with a white (Scotch pad?) and rub it in good before wiping it off.

    Jeremiah.......
I don't know if the poly would hold up on pens/pencils. Hope someone else who knows would chime in........
I would use it on other small turnings like ornaments or pulls, etc.......
