I just ordered a dozen pencil sharpeners for 12$ from Amazon. These should last me through the small project I have on the back burner.

Cancel that order and order one of these:

I have one of this style mounted on the wall (not the same make/model). No batteries and the overwhelming positive feature is that is is always in the same place.

I would even lose a wall mounted one.
That's the style I have...the previous owners of our previous property were school teachers and left one in the building that became my shop. It now lives here in the new shop. It's a Boston brand.

The most expensive tool is the one you buy "cheaply" and often...
I've had a similar one in my shop for years. It also works to chamfer dowels. Mine doest see much use because I switched to .5 mm mechanical pencils.
I use the 12" disc sander on my Shopsmith for all sharpening of round pencils. It's a little underpowered, but it makes a nice point at various angles depending what I'm doing, and I have never lost it yet.
My wall mount sharpener is mounted to a bench in the shop.

The opening for the pencil is self adjusting to hold various sizes of pencils. It also feeds the pencil hands free. For some the biggest drawback may be the pencil is not finished to a fine point. It has a small flat. This can be pointed further with a little work on a piece of paper or sand paper.
There are three other shop pencil sharpeners.

One if for carpenter pencils and the other two are for regular pencils. They can be used to point a pencil fresh out of the hand crank mounted unit if need be.
Finally is my main household pencil sharpener.

There is other household sharpeners, but this is my favorite.

Panasonic is hands down the best for power sharpeners. Only drawback is the small shavings drawer. Holds less than ten pencils worth.

I lost one of those too.
That one stays in its own pocket on my tool belt for when I’m not near one of the numerous crank handle sharpeners. I even have one crank handle for clamping to scaffolding for when I’m up off the ground.
Multiples permanently mounted solves that problem. I like the old Berols best but the Xactos aren’t bad. I even have replacement cutters for the Berols.
I have a Berol less than a foot from the computer and another one down in the shop
