    hi,

i just recently completed a queen size mission-style headboard to add to my collection of mission-style furniture. i made this from white ash and finished it with watco danish oil. here are a couple of pics:

Very nice job Rick. Thanks for sharing.

You know, when I think about a new project I never think of ash, but when I see it (a project) I find it beautiful. I'm going to have give it a try. How is it to work with?

    hi joe,

thanks for your comments, much appreciated.

white ash is very similar to oak in it's characteristics. it is hard, like oak, but i find it easy to work with. i like it a lot, lot better than red oak! it sands and stains up real nice too! and, like you say, it always looks great!

i used q/s white oak for my first mission style project - a coffee table. since then i have been using white ash. at first, it was just a cost thing. locally, q/s white oak runs about $8.50cdn a bd. ft. while white ash costs $4.25cdn a bd. ft. so, i was planning on making a lot of mission style furniture and white ash sure fit the bill price wise.

also, most people who see my finished projects think it is oak anyway - even some experienced woodworkers. i have to tell them it's not - that it's white ash. so, that's kind of cool!

there are some woodworkers who insist that all mission style furniture should be q/s white oak. i never argue the point with them. and, i never claim the stuff i make is authentic mission furniture anyway - just mission "style". but, my stuff isn't for sale anyway, it is for the pleasure and use of me and my family and using white ash i am certainly able to afford to make a lot more of it.

    thanks again.

I love the Mission Style Rick and done in the ash is quite beautiful. You did a wonderful job! Thanks on the heads up on the alternative choice for oak......I am going to definitely keep that in mind. I have to admit, it is kinda nice to see someone else who also has to pay through the nose for hardwoods......I am green with envy with the availability and lower cost that are friends to the south are fortunate enough to enjoy.

Very very nice Rick. All the spindle mortises individually done OR the spacer method.
And...er....curious minds want to know if you picked the linen. LOL

...and since Rick hasn't been posting here lately, I don't think you'll get your linen question answered.
