Shopsmith was used for a lot of years for turning as well as everything else. Hasn't been turning much since the Jet came to live. Works pretty well with new bearings on the quill. Very, very little run out, but still doesn't have the heft and balance of even the 1236 Jet. Even using 80 pounds of sand it's not as good as the Jet.

- Good mix of skill levels, lots of opinions shared freely without flaming or whining. Almost like there should be a sign on the front page that opinions and thoughts are welcome, that "we play nice".
- What is the make, model and year of your lathe?
- Jet 1236, purchased sort of used (returned for upgrade after 3 weeks of gentle use) in 2006
- Carba-Tec mini (old black body model), in my possession since 1994, probably 10 or more years older than that
- Shopsmith, 1992, but had a clone purchased in 1984 or so until 2005
- What is your lathe's capacity?
- Jet is 12 over bed
- Carba-Tec is 10 over bed, but better with smaller
- Shopsmith says it'll take up to 16", but I'll borrow my buddy's Jet or PM for stuff that size, thank you very much!
