thanks Mike, thats a great site, I found some crotch mahogany that I'm going to inquire about tomorrow for the 3 panels in the top of the desk and I'm really leaning toward the african blackwood or ebony for the accents on the legs and the leg bottoms.

Does that sound like a winner??

A darker exotic wood such as Kingwood, Rosewood or Mesquite would look nice next to Mahogany. I guess you could call Mesquite an exotic.

How are you planning to finish the mahogany? Pick an inlay/accent that looks how you want it following the same finish schedule. Trying to finish inlays differently from surrounding wood is a nightmare.

Plain old cherry looks great next to mahogany, especially when BLO'd.

Walnut (chocolately brown or even the lighter sawpwood could work)...end of thread.
    Wood: a fickle medium....

Did you know SMC is user supported? Please help.

    You make the call:

Here it is with alder and a thin strip of walnut:

And here it is next to bloodwood, alder, and black veneer inlay:

    Jeff,

I've used both ebony and boxwood stringing to good effect with mahogany.
