If your thinking of running the line separate which may be the case after you get your answer, just rent a trench machine and do it yourself.
If the gas company is running the line from the house to shop they may run you a separate trench while they have the equipment.
They sell all in one cables (2 coax, 2 cat5e, 1 fiber, etc.) in bundles. This may be a small incremental cost over running the Cat5 and future proof you for the short term (and it's only 1 wire to pull).
If you are running a UG conduit, your CAT 5 cable will need to be gel filled, as any UG conduit will fill w/ water, & normal CAT 5 cable is for dry locations, be warned gel filled is not pleasant to work with.
I've never heard of it either. But I'd probably pull direct-bury rated cat 5 anyway.
