    Wood Identification

    Hi -

I salvaged some wood from my Grandparent's recently (hey, I try to be green), but I am not sure what species these are. I'm sure my grandfather has had these for at least 15 years in his garage. Deep down, I'm hoping for SYP for a bench, although I think most are DF. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I think these are all Douglas Fir, but I have a hard time distinguishing between SYP and DF. I have three of the wider ones (7' x 7" x 1"), rough cut.

    Again, this could be SYP? I have 3 board around 8 feet (8' X 5" x 1 1/4").

Finally, no clue. Two 10 foot boards. Rought cut.

What part of the country is the wood from? The third picture looks like poplar to me.

    Bill -

We live in Southern Ontario. Funny thing is that the wood is leaning on my workbench which has some poplar. I still could not tell.

older growth fir and yellow pines are pretty similar trees. any info on one typically applies to the other for cutting, finishing, etc.

    Thanks Everyone!

Well, based on your responses, looks like the last one is definiately Poplar. Which is OK. I can use it as I finish my basement for trim etc.

I had a feeling that the first pic was Fir, because it smells pretty strong when I cut it. Really piney. Not so with the wood in the second pic. Too bad if the second pic is Fir. I can't find SYP anywhere up here....
