This week I had the opportunity to visit the Riordan Mansion in Flagstaff, AZ. For those who have not heard of it the mansion is a 13000 sq ft Arts and Crafts style home designed by Charles Whittlesey. The 40 room mansion was built for two Riordan brothers and their families in 1904. The Riordans founded the lumber industry in Northern Arizona. The house was donated to the AZ state park system. Google "Riordan Mansion" to see more on the official web site.

The house contains a large collection of A&C furniture and built-ins. There are 20 pieces by Gustav Stickley, four more by Leopold and John George Stickley, five pieces by Harvey Ellis. Family members lived in the house until the mid 1980's! That is why most of the original furniture remains.

Here is a picture of the house. It is one of two wings. RIMA_01.jpg

Next a couple of pieces from the house. These were in the visitor center. Photos are prohibited in a large portion of the house.

IIRC one of the Riordan's collected a large number of wood samples. This piece was created to display them.

The last piece is from The Pioneer Museum in Flagstaff. It is located in the former Coconino County Hospital for the Indigent. I really liked it. It looks like a combination bookshelf and desk.

The mansion and museum are both well worth the time to visitif you are in Flagstaff. They are only about an hour from Sedona as well.
