Does anyone know the availability of drawings to fabricate a wheel for a sailboat that my son will be building. there will be two wheels, one in the cabin and one on the stern deck.

A few months ago there was a great write up on the building of a beautiful ships wheel in Wooden Boat magazine. I am sure you can find it on their forum. I will check the back mags when I get home to see if I can find it for you.
It was a laminated job (three layers) with spokes and I think it was done in Mahogany. Absolutely stunning.

You might want to narrow it down a little there are using wheels and fancy wheels. A boat may need some systems integrated into the steering, like autohelm, and the capability of these systems has to be considered when adding weight.

This is a hub for mating your work to the drive. Wow it is expensive. There are certainly cheaper approaches. They also have a lot of different wheels which is a great resource for seeing what people are dropping money on. I use some of their bronze on my tiller.

One semi modern wood design uses a plate of 5/16- 3/8 inch aluminum to which a wooden skin is attached. John Marples who is a marine engineer sells a book of standard details for efficient cruising designs.

Thank you Russell and Roderick for taking the time to answer my request. Your info was helpfull.
Don.....don't have any plans...but here's a collaboration between myself and Dave Richards. He milled and glued up the blanks for the spokes and sent them to me. I turned them and shipped them back to him in Minnesota. He then finished the project: http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthre...okes&highlight=
