    The first Ford automobiles were made from wood. They started a charcoal company to deal with all the wood scraps (called Kingsford)

    I've worked on a few local car projects fo restorers who needed wooden components made for their vintage cars. Britsh and US vehicles. I enjoyed the work!

    roadsterdrive4.jpgHere's a British vehicle that has always had a wooden structure. The Morgan. Saw a documentary on this many years ago on PBS. Oh, and they say there is nothing to worry about despite ash tree disease:

    Ash dieback disease will not affect Morgan Production
    Recent fear of ash tree disease is a perfect opportunity for the Morgan Motor Company to bury the myth that Morgans have or have ever had a wooden chassis. All Morgan cars since 1909 have had steel or an aluminium chassis and the ash frame has been to strengthen the body. Current Morgans have a rigid chassis and superformed aluminium body work. The wood in the cockpit area is a frame which provides deformable protection between the chassis and the aluminium outer panels.

    Currently Morgan uses ash, preferably in laminated form, but there would be no problem in using alternatives so long as it was durable and reasonably malleable. Morgan will continue to use ash as long as it is available and the company is assured by our suppliers that they have at least 2 years’ worth of stock. Furthermore, ash is grown in France, Belgium, Germany and the USA, which are countries so far not affected by the disease.

    The company therefore has nothing to fear from the current crisis, though we of course are deeply upset by the affect the disease may have on the wonderful British landscape.
