aaaaarrrgghh - convert AVI files to MP4 files

Some movies I'd like to watch on my year-old Panasonic Viera plasma are in MP4 format.

Others are AVIs. They won't play on my TV.

My DELL Laptop is on Vista and I've got VLC installed.

If anybody has any ideas I'd appreciate your help.

Try Handbrake, the Open Source video transcoder. It's not only great, but it's free. You can get it http://handbrake.fr/
It does an excellent job of converting avi to mp4, plus many others. My two favorites VLC and Handbrake.

I use dvdvideosoft. It's a all in one app thats free and does all kinds of things. I use it to upload to youtube, rip video down to music only for the iphone and all kinds of tools to boot. used it forever

XVid4PSP is free and does just about all video conversions. I've used other ones like Super, but I like XVid4PSP.

Please beware, this program contains OpenCandy, which will install other, more than likely unwanted, software on your computer. It will "most likely" have opt-out options during the install process, but they are easy to miss, and some open candy programs will actually install stuff with no way to opt-out. I'm not saying don't install it, just be on the lookout for opt-out options during the install.

True but I'm assuming people read before they install. I've checked it out and ran sec sw against it and been ok and is safe as measured against firewall traps going out. (I check free stuff and I have some tools that are free that work). There are some linux tools, but thats assuming linux eperience which not all have. It's simple and works. You get opt-out on java as well. Just an option and I like it because it's all in one bundle from burning cd/dvd, to ripping to youtube up/down. I've had it fore a long time with no ill effects.
