Its a depth lock

The worst part about mistakes is that you have to make them before you can learn from them.
Looks like it is for setting a depth stop. Is there a corresponding adjustment thumbwheel on the planer head above it?

You can adjust that for actual blade height, or as a repeatable set height. Just make sure you remember which one it's set for.
A Wixey height indicator is a nice addition to the planer.
