Instead of buying flakes and alcohol, I buy SealCoat shellac (2# cut) from my local HD or ACE hardware for about $45 a gallon. I add Transtint dye to it to make any color I need.
John
$19 for the pint here, that's like $120 US per gallon, and I haven't seen 1 gallon pails for a couple of years now.
I prefer the flakes and think this place has good prices and good product. Not sure if they ship to Canada though.

Wood Essence is where I purchased mine. For a sealer, I'm On my second gallon of zinsser Bin purchased at Canadian Tire for $52 per gallon when discounted.
when I find a better source for flakes, I will let you know.
Thanks Robin, the wealthof information they provide would be reason enough to buy from them but shipping and custom brokerage will likely be the killer.
Thanks Joel, I never thought of Wood Essence.
I know they are a dealer for Target Coatings but never considered them as a source for shellac flakes and it looks like they have exactly what I'm looking for.
You just helped me save a bundle
You can get shellac flakes from LeeValley, who does business in Canada.
From what I've seen advertised, Lee Valley's shellac flakes have wax.
John, I'm also curious about Goudey in Toronto. On their site they advertise dry shellac flakes but I haven't contacted them yet. http://www.goudeymfg.com/goudey-lacquers/shellac.html
I'm Glad Wood Essence is working out for you.
LeeValley has a line of German de-waxed shellac. Not cheap, however.
LV carries both, the regular and the dewaxed shellac flakes, only that Wood Essence sells it what seems to be identical to LV's shellac at half the price (1/2).
It can be frustrating at times to find the deals in a country larger than the US but with less than 1/10 the population.
The money I saved on this order is enough to pay the membership for SMC for many years.
