    I'm not surprised the face plate was mentioned early in the replies but I was really surprised a sacrificial piece of ply wasn't mentioned to be glued to the bowl blank with a piece of kraft paper ( brown paper bag ) between the two using a few drops of glue or a full coat of glue if you are skeptical.
    I first learned of this technique in the 1950's turning bowls and have used it frequently for many other projects the remainder of my life. In the pic example, 2 pieces or a dozen pieces can be cut simultaneously and separated with a knife in a few seconds. The paper splits in half. Enjoy your bowl turning experience without concern of the gouge contacting face plate screws.
