    Finish Thinning for HVLP

I have the small Turbine system from Harbor Freight. I've also seen the same system(different markings) at woodcraft. Other than assembly instructions usage and thinning instructions are pretty scarce. It does have a viscocity cup but no directions on how to use it. Does anyone here hava any ideas on using this product?

Chuck, what are you using for finish? If you are using lacquer, as we do, just thin it about 50/50 with lacquer thinner. Our HVLP doesn't have a viscosity cup, so not entirely sure how to answer your question, but with lacquer, a 50/50 mix seems to do very well.

    Chuck,

I read and use-After stirring the finish, remove the stick, after the steady stream goes away and starts to drip, about 1 drop per second should be the right viscoity.

    Just a warning...

I would be VERY careful to use solvent-based finishes with that HVLP or any other system, unless you have an explosion-proof motor, lights, and the whole, complete package. Many people who don't have these simply spray outdoors - BUT it is getting cold outside now, which may limit your spraying ability to days when it is not too windy and the temps are above 50°F or better, depending on the minimum temp for the coatings you are using.

On the other hand, if you are using waterborne coatings, you should add no more than about 10 percent water, or the maximum recommended by the supplier. And you could use these indoors; I recommend you either cover everything within at least ten feet of your spray area, or exhaust through a window or a door to the outside. AND wear a proper respirator approved for organic vapors.
