Turning chess pieces

Just a quick thread, does anyone have any ideas, hints, tips, links, articles etc: on turning chess pieces? We are interested in turning a set.

If anyone has any ideas, I would be interested.

Joash..........You might try doing a search or advanced search on the threads here at SMC. Last year or maybe this year one of our members turned a set. I know I didn't turn then and I was intrigued. He had a lot of photos IIRC. Good luck and photos of your progress would be greatly appreciated!

I used the plans Bill suggested. I turned about 48 pieces to get 32. There were decapitations, disembowelments, and in one case a sex change. I used business cards for story sticks. Mark the highest and lowest points, width of beads and flats, etc along the edge of the card for each piece. Then you have a quick reference guide which saves a lot of time measuring. Do the pawns first for practice. If you aren't good at spindle turning when you start you will be when you finish the project.

Mike Darlow, from your part of the world, wrote an article - I think in woodturning design magazine on design principles of chess sets, very well written and worth looking for, perhaps on the web. Maybe you can get the back issue from them.

That is a very good book, I have browsed through it before, and is also available at our local carbatec, but I think I have found what I need online, including step by step instructions with photographs, as well as chess piece profiles to print out.
