Shop update: Walls!

After a week where I didn't do much of anything thanks to 90* heat and 90% humidity,
My stepson and I got down to brass tacks this past weekend:


Saturday was a rain shortened work day, where we leveled all of the piers and got them secured to the deck once and for all. This is a 'temporary structure' in the eyes of the town, and I know it will move with the freeze thaw cycle, but for now it is level.

Sunday started out with building the 'far' wall opposite the main entrance wall.


and soon I had a wall!

no bracing at this point. The caption for this reads: Hurry up and get the camera!

laid out the studs for the long back wall. simplest of the four walls, no windows or doors in this one.




halfway there...

and on to the main entrance wall. Since I'm going with a small footprint (right Tyler?) I decided to go up instead. The walls are 10' to the top of the sill plates (or they will be, once I get the 2nd plate installed. In keeping with the barn design, I decided that 8' tall doors would be in scale. so:

6' wide 8' tall doorway.
I wrapped up at that point, it was getting late and I was really sore by this point, and didn't want to do anything stupid. Hope to get the last wall framed up today, and then to start assembling trusses.

one little question(okay two little questions):

is it just me or is one of the sill jacks under the window misaligned?
it looks like 'somebody' put the stud on the wrong side of the line from here. It could make for some shiners when you go to sheet it.

also, why did you decide to sheet the walls while standing up? its a lot easier -IMO- to do it while theyre laying on the deck and stand em up complete.

these are questions not judgements, great work so far. good luck with the shop?

yep, the window jacks were added after the wall was up. I'm planning on fixing that before the sheathing goes on.

Speaking of sheathing... mostly to protect the siding. I knew it would be easier to do horizontally, but given the pace I'm putting it up, I didn't want the OSB to get soaked before the roof goes on. Tyvek will help, but I wasn't going to tyvek the Inside of the shop. I am planning on sheathing the end trusses before they go up. I'm not looking forward to the roofing work at all, but it will get done. eventually.

Looking real good. Your still a step or so ahead of me. I was short a couple of floor joists, got them cut on the mill today and maybe get them in tonight or tomorrow.
