We received the following email from Iraq today, addressed to the attention of my son, Ethan. You will recall Ethan turned his first pen at the Woodcraft Turn-a-thon in Ft. Worth a couple months ago. I am sure when I get done with school, I will have to learn to turn pens, as I think when my son reads this email he will want to turn a lot more. I will talk to my son tonight to make sure he sends an appropriate reply. I have sanitized this email for operational security.
Young Mr. Shupe,
My name is Colonel *********** and although I'm not a soldier - I am a
US Marine serving my second 7 month tour in Iraqi. I was here for the war
last year and came back in January for the second phase. I received the pen
you made and I wanted to thank you for taking the time to make the pen and
more importantly rather than keeping the pen - you were willing to give it
up! That quite a sacrifice young man! Almost the same kind of sacrifice
the soldiers and marines made when they came over here, leaving their
families and friends to stand up to terrorist and to fight for our freedom.
But you don't need to worry about all that just yet - OK! Ethan, as
flattered as I am to have your pen - my present to you son is I want to give
it back to you when I leave Iraqi in *******- if that's OK with you? I'll use
it awhile and then you can say this pen traveled over 9,000 miles to Iraqi
and a Marine had the privilege of using it! So if you and I have a deal -
you send me your address and I'll make sure to return your *first*pen back
to you when I finish using it here in Iraqi. You're quite an impressive
young man Ethan - I am very privileged to have received this pen from a fine
young man who understand what it means to be a soldier or Marine protecting
his or her country! Your study hard, listen to your parents, and always DO
what's right. If you do all that you'll never go wrong! God Bless you and
the rest of your family! Thanks again for the pen!
