Really cool new message from Iraq!

We received the following email from Iraq today, addressed to the attention of my son, Ethan. You will recall Ethan turned his first pen at the Woodcraft Turn-a-thon in Ft. Worth a couple months ago. I am sure when I get done with school, I will have to learn to turn pens, as I think when my son reads this email he will want to turn a lot more. I will talk to my son tonight to make sure he sends an appropriate reply. I have sanitized this email for operational security.

    Young Mr. Shupe,

My name is Colonel *********** and although I'm not a soldier - I am a
US Marine serving my second 7 month tour in Iraqi. I was here for the war
last year and came back in January for the second phase. I received the pen
you made and I wanted to thank you for taking the time to make the pen and
more importantly rather than keeping the pen - you were willing to give it
up! That quite a sacrifice young man! Almost the same kind of sacrifice
the soldiers and marines made when they came over here, leaving their
families and friends to stand up to terrorist and to fight for our freedom.
But you don't need to worry about all that just yet - OK! Ethan, as
flattered as I am to have your pen - my present to you son is I want to give
it back to you when I leave Iraqi in *******- if that's OK with you? I'll use
it awhile and then you can say this pen traveled over 9,000 miles to Iraqi
and a Marine had the privilege of using it! So if you and I have a deal -
you send me your address and I'll make sure to return your *first*pen back
to you when I finish using it here in Iraqi. You're quite an impressive
young man Ethan - I am very privileged to have received this pen from a fine
young man who understand what it means to be a soldier or Marine protecting
his or her country! Your study hard, listen to your parents, and always DO
what's right. If you do all that you'll never go wrong! God Bless you and
the rest of your family! Thanks again for the pen!

PS: Check the picture out - I'm the guy on the left of General ********

Wow - Tears in my eye. I am sure Ethan is feeling pretty good about this (as well he should). Martin, you must be very proud of your son. Congrats Ethan on a job well done. And if the Colonel does return the pen, wouldn't it be great to frame it up along side his wonderful email.

WOW! The power wielded by a youngster!

Here's the photo I took of Ethan and the "now legendary" first pen at the Fort Worth Woodcraft Store turn-a-thon. David Rose from Wichita Falls is the guy behind him who showed Ethan how to make the pen!

    Thanks, gang!

    Martin,

This is REALLY COOL!!!! See if you can arrange with the Colonel to meet up with you and Ethan...take your camera and get the Col. to present the pen to Ethan...take the picture, laser engrave the pen with the kind Col's name, name of the war fought and then put the original email, pen and pic of the presentation in a special frame and give it to Ethan as a special gift. It will be one he will treasure forever...!!!!

My hat is OFF to you Ethan....great going Martin..!!! I am proud of you BOTH!!!
    Thanks & Happy Wood Chips,

    More excellent suggestions from Dennis.

Ethan is working on his email today. We will have to ask the Colonel his hometown to see if a meeting could be set up.

And once again, thanks to David Rose and Jerry Stringer, who made this all possible for my son.

If someone had the right contact, there is a heckuva news story here!!!!

    Maybe even national . . .

Get a senator or representative involved and it just may happen.

I think someone mentioned awhile back that the Texas Country Reporter was supposed to do something on the Freedom Pens. Maybe he could include this part as well.

I forwarded this thread to the manager of the Fort Worth Woodcraft. I'm sure he'll bump it up to corporate as well.

I just wish I had the contact.

After thinking about it, if a biker modeling a wedding dress on Ebay can get over 6 million hits and a spot on the Today Show, why can't this get some coverage? Maybe if Ethan wears a dress!!! Yea! That's it!

    Whaddya think, Ethan??

    Jerry Ol' Buddy......

I think you've been around them pen tubes far too long.!! I believe you need to take a short break and recoupe your brain cells.!!! Ethan can't wear a dress and get that kind of attention.....No sir-ree.....It has to be a To-To!!!
or is that a "Tu-Tu"....or a Three-Three.....oh well....I better give up before I get myself in trouble again.
    Thanks & Happy Wood Chips,

    Message from Ethan's dad...

    1) No dresses on my boy.

    2) No tu tu's either.

    3) A news story or Texas Country Reporter is ok with me, but I'd better check with my SWMBO.

Sorry to disappoint you, Jerry, but I won't wear a dress either.

    Good joke, though...
