    Sumac Pencil Cup

My 10 year old asked for a pencil cup. We fashioned it after a water hose spray nozzle. The wood was from one of the larger Sumac shrubs we removed. We are reforesting with black Cherry trees on this part of our property. The Sumac turns like flat sawn Sycamore. The color is a variation of greens and browns. The cup has a flat inside bottom and sharp tapered corners. Approximate size 3" x 4 5/8".

Nice wood - great form! Did your 10 year old assist with the turning process?

Neat. Nice figure in that wood, and good idea. Makes me wonder why we haven't seen more of these. Seems like everyone needs to hold pencils and pens.

Tim, That's beautiful. Might want to check w/ all the nearby arborists and whoever to gather up some more. Like the shape. Not your same ole boring straight sided cup. A very nice piece.

Thank you all for the comments. My son helped in harvesting the shrubs but has not stayed with turning. He had a few scary catches and decided to postpone turning until he builds up his nerve again. Tim...
