This hunk of Apple is all heartwood with the piths on both sides.
I used Dennis's ideal of soaking her in a oil bath and it seems to of worked.
She has done some moving but has settled down now

Gary - I think that is the first apple hollow form I have ever seen. Beautiful color and finish! Looking forward to the next one!

Wood in every shelf and nook and cranny,,, seriously too much wood!
Gary I am like Steve. I don't think I have seen a apple HF either. Looks great and hope it quits moving.

Never put off until tomorrow what you can do the day after tomorrow.
To succeed in life, you need three things: a wishbone, a backbone and a funnybone.
Now I like that one, especially the color.

Gary,
A beautiful hollow form. I too have a lot of apple. The first few turnings all cracked violently so now I've got the rest waxed up to the eyeballs. I'm going to let them sit for a long time to get that moisture out before attempting anything again.
Fortunately, apple makes great BBQ wood so I've already used some of the cracked pieces for last nights ribs. Delicious!
What did you do to get that beautiful color?
Burt
Burt this apple has so much heart wood that it is almost unreal.
I hope to turn some more real soon and I will post a pic of the blank.
There is no color added---this is just soaked in a oil bath for about a week---air dried for a week and them a couple coats of Polly.
She's been sitting on the couch for a week now and seems to of calmed down.
---I may be broke---but we have plenty of wood---
.....and it didn't crack?
Wow. every piece of apple I have seen, ends up cracking! Good luck. I hope she will be okay.
That is sharp! Next Apple HF you do... should be in the shape of an apple then put a 'stem' lid on it.
Have a Nice Day!
