These are gorgeous. I have a question though.
How cost effective are they? Buying all that exotic wood must come at a premium. I looked into making one for personal use out of rock maple, and the price for stock is exorbitant.

I know most people use scraps, but your quantity of boards dictates otherwise.

Those look great, Kevin. How are you flattening them, and what finish are you putting on them? I've been using a router bridge, but it still leaves a lot of end grain sanding.

Joe, check out the local woodworkers supply stores/lumber yards for turning blanks. You can pick stock that works well for end grain boards for a lot less money if you're willing to mix and match a bit.

the boards are all made from slices, i make a large "loaf" and cut slices from it. I use 4 cauls with bessey K clamps. Then use a 4x24" porter cable sander with 50grit to flatten. all edges routed and wiped with plenty of mineral oil. thanks for looking!~ :>

Here are the first few I built. With Christmas around the corner I thought I would make a few as gifts.




This design is from Mark over at The Wood Whisperer. I wanted to cut out small recessed finger holds on the bottom.


To make it easier I built a jig for my router.


They are made of purpleheart and soft maple. Soft maple is still fairly hard and the hard maple was way more expensive. My total cost worked out around $20 to $25 per board.
