A question, though. The reason for two V's in one of the pieces? Different sized blanks?

Yes, I have different size blanks to use up--sure beats $40 for store bought vise.
Probably would work OK using round blanks with a little sandpaper glued into the v block.

What do you use to back the bottom for the exit hole, when you drill through the blanks? Looks like a nice drilling jig.

The piece on the bottom gets to be sacrificial, and can be replaced when it gets too ragged. But generally the center hole will always be in the same place.
