This skylight replaces a deteriorating flat hatch that was nothing more
than a piece of polycarbonate screwed to a teak box. It features
bronze gutter pipes, stainless hardware, and beveled safety glass.

This forward hatch was built to complement the skylight. I wanted the
sash to have the same profile which meant fabricating new hinges from
    scratch.

    And a dorade box

    Thanks for looking...

    That is fabulous work.
I could cry for the time I've wasted, but thats a waste of time and tears.

  4. Fantastic work, Martin!

For the fabricated hinges on the forward hatch, did you use stainless and machine it? Or was it cast? They look as nice as any I've seen.

    Is that a Tartan?

    Thanks for the kind words.

The hinges are actually chrome over bronze. The parts were cut out
from plate on a waterjet and then silver soldered together. I had
looked at casting them but decided it was too cost prohibitive for
    a one off custom piece.

    Is that a Tartan?
No, she's an Ericson cruising 31.

    The first photograph is called

a "Butterfly Hatch". As a matter of fact, tomorrow I am going to purchase teak to build one for my boat.
I wasn't sure how it would look on my boat so I spent an hour making one out of MDF and put it in place to see if I would like it and I did. I have been putting this of for a few months now and finally am going to make it.

Thanks Roy. The wood is teak. The finish is 10 coats of Epifanes varnish.

That's really fine looking work, Martin! And in this day and age of endless fiberglass and composites, it's wonderful to see some traditional wood used like that. Beautiful!

    Martin,
This is wonderful work...did you consider putting a little radius on the top part of the bronze gutters in the hatch? klutz that I am, I could see those protruding corners puncturing some portion of my anatomy sooner or later.

    Very nice work.
One of my jobs on Dad's boat as a kid was refinishing the teak rails, swim platform etc etc etc... man I hated that job but loved that boat. Oddly enough I chose woodworking now instead of having to do it to go fishing....
